Westerman, Hattori, Daniels & Adrian, LLP
Bill Westerman and Ken Hattori began working together on patent cases in the fall of 1983. Scott Daniels joined Bill and Ken in 1986, and Steve Adrian has practiced law with them since 1991. This relationship entered a new phase when we opened our doors as Westerman, Hattori, Daniels & Adrian, LLP (WHDA) on October 1, 2003.

WHDA practices exclusively in the area of intellectual property law at our new location on Connecticut Avenue in the heart of Washington, DC.

WHDA is a full service intellectual property law firm. The firm includes a staff of twenty U.S. lawyers and five Japanese Benrishi (two of which are also U.S. attorneys). Though our firm is brand new, our lawyers and patent professionals are experienced in all technical areas, including mechanical, electrical, electronic, optical, chemical, pharmaceutical, metallurgical, and biotechnical arts. The firm also has a thriving trademark practice. Our name partners average over twenty years of experience in intellectual property law. The firm’s legal expertise includes interferences, licensing, counseling, patentability, validity and infringement opinions, and, most particularly patent preparation and prosecution and trademark preparation and prosecution. Litigation before the Federal Circuit, the District Courts, and the ITC is handled by a separate litigation department within WHDA.

The operation of the WHDA firm is based on many years of experience of providing clients with high quality professional service at a reasonable price. We use the latest technology to improve the efficiency and accuracy of our organization by implementing a state-of-the art computer system. This technology enables us to provide better service with more flexibility in responding to individualized requests of clients. But this is only the beginning. We continue to search for ways to improve service to our clients through technology and other avenues.

One of the impressive features of WHDA, which other U.S. law firms do not have, is a strong Japan group composed of native Japanese: two U.S. patent lawyers, five Benrishi (Japanese patent attorneys), and about ten Japanese paralegal/secretaries. This Japan group works on all types of prosecution, litigation and opinions in the Japanese language. Our native Japanese U.S. lawyers are also available to serve as expert witnesses in Japanese-patent related litigation.

We look forward to continuing to serve our current clients and to establishing relationships with new clients. With almost twenty five lawyers and patent professionals well experienced in intellectual property law, we are confident that we will be able to meet our clients’ intellectual property needs effectively and efficiently. The efforts of our attorneys (and Benrishi), together with our dedicated staff, will prove to you that WHDA is the long-term answer to your intellectual property needs.
