The number of ex parte and inter partes reexaminations has climbed in recent years. But whose patents are being reexamined?
Starting with the first Official Gazette in January of this year, and running through November 3, we counted the number of patents for each company, with the following results:
1. Rambus – 27
2. LG Electronics – 10
3.
Weatherford/Lamb – 9
4.
Mondis Technology – 9
5.
ADC Technology – 8
6.
Belden – 7
7. Cognex – 6
8. Lumenis – 6
9. Motorola – 6
10. Baxter – 5
11. Wisconsin Alumni Foundation – 5
Those who have followed Rambus’ litigation will not be surprised to see that it leads the league.
Relatively few requests were filed for pharmaceutical patents, but they included several high-profile, commercially significant patents.
Though Japanese companies account for a substantial portion of issued U.S. patents, they are only rarely involved in reexaminations. One exception is the videogame maker ADC which ranks fifth.
